He was the owner of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds.

(there were only 27 in the Wehrmacht)

Most successful submarine commander in World War II !

On May 14, 1945, shortly after midnight, Lüth was shot dead in Flensburg by the sailor on duty Matthias Gottlob when he did not respond to a call from a patrol.
