On January 13, 1933, he was elected Lord Mayor of the City of Oldenburg (i. O.) and was introduced to his office on January 17, 1933.
When Oldenburg was occupied by British troops on May 5, 1945, immediately at the end of the Second World War, the British military administration ousted him and he was arrested.
