From 1914 to 1918 he served as an aviation doctor. In 1919 he became full professor and institute director in Hamburg.
In 1933 he signed the professors' commitment to Adolf Hitler and the National Socialist state at German universities and colleges.
In 1939 he emigrated with his wife to Margate in Kent, from May to September 1940 interned as enemy aliens on the Isle of Man.
