He belonged to the Beck / Goerdeler shadow cabinet and, after a successful attack on Adolf Hitler, should have exercised the post of political sub-commissioner for Military District VI (Münster).
This planning was carried out at the instigation of Ferdinand Freiherr von Lüninck without Sümmermann's knowledge. After the failure of the assassination attempt on July 20, 1944, he was arrested by the Gestapo.
He was imprisoned, among other places, in the Ravensbrück concentration camp before he was released from prison on February 16, 1945 without giving any reason.
