He was one of the resistance fighters from July 20, 1944.
In 1944 he was inspector of the military substitute system in Berlin. On July 20, 1944, the conspirators appointed him commander of military district III (Berlin) and successor to the arrested General Joachim von Kortzfleisch. He took over the command of the general command.
He was sentenced to death on October 5 and shot on October 24, 1944 in the Brandenburg-Görden prison.
