From February 12, 1912 to November 8, 1918, he was Bavarian State Minister of Finance.
In 1907 Breunig was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Bavarian Crown by Prince Regent Luitpold.
Associated with this was the elevation to the personal nobility and he was allowed to call himself Ritter von Breunig after his entry in the nobility register.
