He belonged to the "Kreisau Circle".

On July 20, 1944, Gerstenmaier made his "pistol and pocket bible" in Berlin's Bendler Block to support the attempt to overthrow the assassination attempt on Hitler. There he was arrested and sentenced by the People's Court on January 11, 1945 as one of the few resistance fighters not to death, but to 7 years in prison.

With the end of the war in 1945 he was released.
