On January 23, 1942 he was sentenced to death for "negligent disobedience in the field".

On February 22, 1942, Adolf Hitler commuted the sentence to six years in prison.

He spent his imprisonment in the military prison in Germersheim.

Although he had had no contact with the assassins of July 20, 1944, he was shot on July 23, 1944 on Himmler's orders with the active support of Gauleiter Josef Bürckel without being judged as an example.
